 AI Audition : Steven Evans

I took my seat to wait to audition. As it got closer to my audition, I got more and more nervous. This was it, I got called into the auditioning room.

"Good luck," the previous singer said to me, still smiling widely from being put through.
"Thanks!" I said with a smile.

It was my time to shine.

I opened the door, excited yet still nervous. I stood up straight and took a deep breath. Walking over towards Simon, I swallowed anxiously and gave him a smile. I wanted this more than anyone knew.

Simon was still stunned as the previous auditioner, Gabriel, left the room. Two outstanding auditions in a row and the first was good, even though it was pitchy. So far, it was going really well to Simon's surprise. Hopefully, the next person would do the same. He didn't need a William Hung to crush his spirits and make him deaf.

The next person was another boy. It was a little obvious he was a little nervous from the look on his face, the deep breath he took and how he swallowed. Plus his smile also gave off the nervous feel. Simon leaned back in his chair.

"Hello," Simon said, "State your name, age and you may sing."

"Hi Simon! I'm Steven Evans, 22, and I'm going to sing "These Walls" by Teddy Geiger."

Before I started to sing, clips of the phone call I had with my girlfriend popped into my mind. "I've got this," I told myself. I've been practicing singing this song like crazy, I can hit all the notes right, it was just whether or not I could impress Simon. The song I was about to sing sums up how I feel about the whole situation with my girlfriend.

I can't believe what is in front of me
The water's rising up to my knees
I can't figure out how the hell I wound up here
Everything seemed okay when I started out the other day
Then the rain came pouring down and now I'm drowning in my fears

As I watch the setting sun
I wonder if I'm the only one...

I decided to slow down the pace of the verses to make sure I pronounced each note clearly, and to show off my sexy sensual tone. I let go of my nerves and loosened up as I went into the chorus.

Cause everybody tries to put some love on the line
And everybody feels a broken heart sometimes
And even when I'm scared I have to try to fly
Sometimes I fall, but I've seen it done before
I gotta step outside these walls

I got really into the song, moving my hands and body with the beat of the song. I felt the song, I was ready to fly and move on with my relationship. The song felt very real to me at the time. I held out the notes for a couple seconds at the end of the first couple lines.

I've got no master plan
To help me out or make me stand up
For all the things that I really want
You had me too afraid to ask
As I look ahead of me
I try and pray for sanity

I played with the pitch a little bit, while in tune of course. I went a bit higher on some notes to show off my higher register.

Cause everybody tries to put some love on the line
And everybody feels a broken heart sometimes
And even when I'm scared I have to try to fly
Sometimes I fall, but I've seen it done before
I gotta step outside these walls

The bridge came, I gave it my all.

These walls can't be my haven
These walls can't keep me safe here
And now I guess I gotta let them down

Instead of singing the last note ("down") the way Teddy does, I decided to show off my higher register a bit more and sing it with a crescendo, holding it out and leading it into the first note of the chorus.

Cause everybody tries to put some love on the line
And everybody feels a broken heart sometimes
And even when I'm scared I have to try to fly
Sometimes I fall, but I've seen it done before
I gotta break out, I gotta break out, I gotta step outside these walls
I felt my heart break, but it's a brand new day

I sang the heck out of those last couple lines with passion and strength. I finished and took another breath and stood there, waiting to see what Simon had to say. No matter what would happen, I was happy to let all of that out of my system.

"Well, first of all, I really like this song an that was definitely the type of music you should be singing," Simon said, "And I really felt you were really prepared for this. You hit the notes really, really well and all I can say is wow! This city sure has a lot of talent and you are one of them. Go and get your ticket. You're going to Hollywood!"

Simon leaned back in his chair, relieved. So far, so good. Now time for the next auditioner to enter the door and either wow him or just make his ears fall out. He'd just have to wait and see.

(Congrats! You may go move into the hotel and then, you can start practicing over at the Hollywood area.)

I breathed a HUUUGE sigh of relief and said, "Thank you! Thank you SO much!"

I couldn't help but smile as wide as a football field when I saw the yellow ticket with my name on it.
